Why this course?
This one-year MRes in Climate Change Adaptation aims to provide advanced study in key issues related to climate change and global warming, and how infrastructure will need to adapt.
The course links with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and in particular the different indicators associated with SDG13 on Climate Action. The course is largely research and project-based but there is also a taught element to it.
This course is designed to cater mainly for graduates with an engineering education, and employees of public and private sector companies who wish to upgrade their skills to be able to tackle the complex issues relating to the current climate crisis, circular economy goals, and the design of engineering options for mitigating environmental impacts and promoting sustainable development.

An MRes takes one year full-time or two years part-time to complete. Part-time study is only available to UK students.
You can also study this course part-time through online distance learning, over 36 months, offering a flexible mode of study (starting academic year 2020-21).

You'll complete six taught modules. Four classes are compulsory and you then choose two optional.
As part of the class Independent Study in Collaboration with Industry, you can apply to work with industry projects. One of the projects is the Carbon Clinic. This is an innovative collaborative project between the Carbon Trust and the University. It aims to provide support to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to reduce their carbon footprint and give you practical experience on environmental responsibilities within a business.

In this class, run by the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, you'll gain the knowledge and skills on atmospheric pollution and climate change impacts, ranging from local to global scales. The class includes a focus on the assessment and management of environmental impacts on people through the interface between environmental science and engineering activities that mitigate environmental risks. Learning objectives are assessed through a formative portfolio covering the main syllabus areas. Student interaction is encouraged throughout the class through structured feedback sessions, directed reading, student-led question sessions & directed questions sessions.
The class, run by the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering, introduces circular economy as a systems-based concept in which production is designed to be restorative and resilient, while waste is designed out of the system. Circular economy is thus featured as a reaction to the conventional dispensation of the linear ‘make-use-dispose’ economy, and as a framework for the development and management of a sustainable, ‘waste-as-a-resource’ economic system. The implications of the concept for research, policy and industrial practice are also explored as these relate to innovation and knowledge production; social trends and consumer behaviour; conservation and sustainable use of energy and material resources; climate change and environmental sustainability; and design of business models for green enterprise development and for sustainable growth and employment generation.
This class, run by the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering, provides an introduction to the methods used to predict environmental impacts, and evaluates how these may be used to integrate environmental factors into decisions. The class draws principally on the UK planning context of environmental impact assessment of individual projects (project EIA), but also takes account of EIA experience in other countries and international organisations. Students are also introduced to key principles of Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA).
The class discusses the key principles, and practical exercises, on both quantitative and qualitative research methods, including survey methods, interviewing techniques, use of census data and statistical methods.
The class also includes discussion of ethical issues. Finally, there is some research project-related teaching on choosing a research question and a research method, and writing a research proposal.

You can choose your optional classes from a wide range of postgraduate classes on offer, as approved by MRes Course Director.
Our MRes students also have the option of taking “Independent Study in Collaboration with Industry”. This exciting new module allows students to gain credits for work carried out with, at or for an external organisation. Approval for students taking this module is done on a case-by-case basis by the MRes Course Director. Student participation is selected by competitive application and CV.
Learning & teaching
This course is delivered via a mixture or lectures, tutorial, practical laboratories and research seminars.
You'll be assessed via a mixture of written assignments, formal exams, lab-based assessments, poster presentations and team projects.
The final MRes thesis is assessed orally in a viva voce exam.
A first or upper second class Honours degree from a UK institution (or overseas equivalent).

An MRes will significantly enhance your CV and improve future employment prospects.
During your studies you'll develop a range of transferable skills that are relevant to careers in industry, academia and the public sector.
In addition, our MRes will develop your communication skills, critical analysis and presentation skills as well as giving you experience of conference attendance and working with large bodies of complex material. An MRes can also be used as a stepping stone for students wishing to continue to an MPhil or PhD, either as a precursor or initial component of the research.
